Message from General Casey
November 5, 2009
This afternoon Ft. Hood suffered a terrible tragedy when a gunman opened fire on Soldiers gathered for pre-deployment processing. Tragically, twelve were killed and another 31 injured.
Ft. Hood’s leadership is working to identify those killed and injured, notify their next of kin and provide the necessary counseling support to care for all Soldiers and Family members who want or need it.
The Army Criminal Investigation Command and FBI are investigating.
Secretary of the Army John McHugh and I will travel to Ft. Hood tomorrow and I will keep you posted over the coming days. In the meantime, I ask you to do the following within your organizations:
- Remember those Soldiers and Families in your thoughts and prayers, particularly those who have lost a loved one.
- Review your force protection measures and, without over reacting, take appropriate action to mitigate risk until the situation is clarified
- Talk to your Soldiers, Families and Civilians, as the situation unfolds, to keep them accurately informed.
- As details are released, resist the urge to speculate until the investigation is complete.
- Finally, stay focused on your mission
The Army is a resilient force and not a stranger to the pain of tragedy and loss – we will get through this together as a Family – Army Strong!
